I had the pleasure of hanging out with Jeff in his shop last week. Jeff told me about Sushi On a Roll, his sushi catering company that has been serving the SoCal area for almost 30 years. We chatted for a couple of hours about a bunch of different things. He shared with me the history of Sushi On a Roll, it’s struggles and it’s accomplishments.
As I hung out with Jeff I noticed that sushi to him went hand in hand with having a good time. Even when he was telling me about serving massive numbers for big name clientele like MTV or Seaworld, he described it as a fond memory; nothing stressful, just a fun time with his buddies.
Currently Sushi On a Roll is located in the back of Kyoto, a 60 year old Japanese grocery store in National City. Jeff is still able to prepare for large catering events in the space while also able to serve his delicious food to people who come by the store for some groceries. While I was there, multiple regulars picked up food and a couple of of his close friends stopped by and hung around and chatted. I left Kyoto with 3 to-go boxes full of sushi and a warm feeling.
